This review is for players outside Ethiopia: the Ethiopian Lottery Service suspended the licences of all operators.
A betting site launching for Ethiopian players in 2026 is not an opportunity. It is a question that needs an answer: launching under what licence?
The answer is none. On 30 July 2026 the Ethiopian Lottery Service put it plainly: at present, there is no sports betting organisation operating in Ethiopia with a legal licence. There is no application process open, no pathway, and no published timeline for one.
So anything arriving now, with a fresh brand and a welcome bonus and an Amharic landing page, is arriving into a gap. The regulator has said out loud that people are exploiting that gap by misrepresenting their legal status, and warned that dealing with unlicensed operators could expose your money and personal information to serious risk.
Redefining “new” in this market
Before December 2025, a new betting site usually meant what you would expect: a company had gone through licensing, built a platform and opened for business. Between roughly 2018 and 2024 that happened often enough that a list of new arrivals was genuinely useful.
None of that describes the market now. Nobody can be licensed, so a new arrival is one of four things, and it is worth being able to tell them apart.

Fifty-nine brands, checked by hand
I checked fifty-nine Ethiopian betting brands by hand on 25 August 2026. Six were open and working. Here is where the rest were.
- Nine addresses were listed for sale by domain brokers, including Arada Bet, Bet251, BirrBet, Blenbet, Ethiobet, Fidelbet, Habtam Bet, MedaBet and Utop Bet. Those names are available to anyone with a few hundred dollars.
- Two had already been taken over. Type habeshabet.com and you get a shopping site, or an adult webcam site, depending on the hour. Anbessa Bet now serves an Australian casino affiliate page.
- Five of the old .et addresses now host somebody else’s review pages. Axum Bet, Bravo Bet, Flash Bet, Konjo Bet and Zemen Bet all resolve to near-identical “Review 2026” pages built from one template.
- Thirteen block visitors from outside Ethiopia entirely, and six have posted their own closure or maintenance notices.
So the pipeline for “new” Ethiopian betting sites looks like from the supply side: a large stock of recognisable names, most of them cheap, all of them still carrying search traffic from people who used to trust them.
Why the old-brand trick works so well
An expired betting brand keeps its search traffic for years. People type the name out of habit, and every one of those visitors arrives already half-convinced, because they came looking for a company they remember.
Buying the name costs very little. Putting a sportsbook skin behind it costs almost nothing. And the customers who turn up have no way of knowing the people behind the door changed, because nothing on the new site is obliged to tell them.
If a familiar Ethiopian brand suddenly looks reborn with a generous offer, the first thing I would check is not the bonus terms. It is whether anything about the operator is the same beyond the logo: the company name in the footer, the support phone number, the app in the store, the address in the terms.
Payment methods on new Ethiopian betting sites
Payments are where a new arrival gives itself away faster than anywhere else, because payments are the part that cannot be faked with a template.
The December 2025 directive told financial institutions to freeze transactions tied to the revoked operators and required payment systems connected to betting accounts to be disabled. The National Bank separately prohibited birr-paired peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading on 27 February 2026. Between those two, the obvious routes into a betting account from inside Ethiopia are closed.
- A new site advertising instant Telebirr deposits is claiming a capability the directive removed. Something else is happening, and the beneficiary name on your own statement will tell you what.
- A new site offering crypto deposits is asking you to make a birr-paired conversion that the National Bank prohibited in February.
- A new site with no visible cashier before registration is the norm rather than a red flag. Every one of the six working operators does this, which is a problem with the whole market rather than with any one of them.
- A new site that lists methods but cannot show you a completed withdrawal has told you nothing. Deposits are the easy direction and they prove nothing about the other one.
How many new betting sites launch in Ethiopia each year?
This used to be a straightforward question with a number attached. It is not any more, and the honest answer is worth more than an invented figure.
When licensing existed, arrivals were countable because they went through the National Lottery Administration. The suspension list published on 4 December 2025 gives some sense of the scale the market had reached: twenty-two licensed operators named at once, in a sector processing 800 million to one billion birr a day.
Since 15 December 2025 the count is zero, because there is no process to launch through. What has continued is churn: domains changing hands, brands being repointed, and affiliate pages appearing on addresses that used to belong to bookmakers. Of the fifty-nine brands I checked, sixteen addresses were either for sale or already serving something unrelated. That is the only kind of “new” this market currently produces, and counting it as launches would be misleading.
Games new sites lead with
Every new arrival in this market opens with the same shelf, and it is not football. When I looked at the lobbies of the operators still running, the products pushed hardest were crash games and slots, placed in front of the sportsbook in the navigation.
Crash games
Aviator, JetX, Aviatrix, Fury Flight, Crash Royale and the rest are all the same mechanic under different artwork: a multiplier climbs and you cash out before it stops. They are on every platform here. QwickBirr, Telebet, Hulusport and BestBet all lead with them.
They are popular for an obvious reason. A round lasts seconds, the decision feels like skill, and the cash-out button gives you something to do. The house edge is fixed and the pace means you meet it many times faster than you would on a football coupon. Nothing about a new site changes that arithmetic.
Slots
Lobbies are built from the same supplier catalogues, which is why the names repeat across brands. QwickBirr was showing Fruit Mania, Simba Nyati, Dollar Fruits, Star Fruits, Tajiri Fruits, Avia Masters and Safari Simba. VivaGame was showing Gates of Olympus 1000, Sugar Rush 1000, Lucky Tiger, Lucky Ox and Chests of Caishen.
Any site offering “exciting new slots” is almost always offering the same games from the same providers with a different logo above them. That is not a criticism of the games. It is a reason not to treat the library as a differentiator when choosing where to put money.
Jackpots and tournaments
Watch these claims carefully, because they are the cheapest thing on a page to inflate. QwickBirr was advertising a 6,000,000 ETB challenge while all four of its visible jackpot meters read 0 ETB. Telebet, by contrast, showed a populated counter above 13,500,000 ETB. Same market, same afternoon, entirely different relationship between the banner and the number.
Five arguments for trying a new site, assessed honestly
These are the reasons that appear on every page about new betting sites. Here is what each one is worth in Ethiopia in 2026.

Notice what is missing from that list, on every site that publishes it: whether the operator pays. That is the only argument that would matter, and it is the one nobody makes, because nobody has tested it.
Six questions before you deposit anywhere new
None of these require any expertise and all of them take under a minute.
- Does it claim an Ethiopian licence? If yes, it is lying, and you can stop there. None exist.
- Who is the company? Look for a name, a registration number and a jurisdiction in the footer. Several operators still running here have none of the three.
- Can you reach a human? A published phone number and email beats a chat widget. QwickBirr publishes both; most do not.
- What does the address itself do? Open it and look. Adverts, a for-sale listing, a ww1 or ww12 subdomain, or a blank page all mean the same thing.
- Has anyone completed a withdrawal? Ask in a group you trust, and be specific about the method and how long it took.
- Does the sport you bet actually have markets? The counter next to each sport is printed on the page. Thirty-nine sports with thirteen markets behind one of them is a menu, not a product.
Start small, and treat the first withdrawal as the test
If you are going to try something new anyway, the sequence matters more than the choice.
Deposit the smallest amount the site allows. Place one bet. Then, before you do anything else, request a withdrawal and see what happens. Not after a big win, when you have real money at stake and every incentive to be optimistic. Now, when losing it would cost you nothing.
That single test tells you more than every review on the internet, including mine. I have been honest throughout this site that I could not run it myself, because it would mean depositing real money into unlicensed platforms to write a page. - They put up a notice instead of leaving a dead page, and they wrote it in Amharic as well as English
- The domain and the certificate are still being paid for, so somebody is still there
- The main domain still resolves and still holds a valid certificate, so the brand has not been abandoned entirely
Where this leaves the idea of a “new” site
There is no list of promising new Ethiopian betting sites for 2026, and any page offering you one is either old or selling something. What exists is a market where six brands out of fifty-nine still function, none of them legally, and a large supply of recognisable names available to anyone who wants to reuse them.
If you are outside Ethiopia, the operators reviewed on this site are what is actually reachable. If you are inside the country, waiting costs you nothing, and the regulator has given no indication that the position is about to change.
